One of the questions I get asked the most is "What should I/we wear?" This can be a daunting task trying to coordinate your entire family's wardrobe. Before you've spent a significant amount of time staring into your closet trying to make sense of what would make you look your very best consider the following.
General Styling Tips:
1. Start by showing off your personality! Pick clothes that reflect YOU and make you feel good. If you feel like a million bucks it will make you look like a million bucks. This also means that you should choose clothing that fits you well and isn't too tight or too baggy.
2. Don't be afraid of color or patterns. Vibrant colors and simple patterns photograph very well and can really make your photographs pop! Jewel tones work great for fair skin tones. I do recommend that you stay away from characters, logos, or lettering on clothing as they tend to take attention away from your face.
3. Layer! wear a cute jacket, scarf, tie, or collared shirt. Think about texture also for added interest.
4. Don't forget about your feet! And remember that sometimes its best to go barefoot.
Children and Baby Styling Tips:
Choose clothes that are fun and comfortable for your child to wear. If your child hates their outfit there is a good chance their unhappiness will show up in their photographs. Baby Gap has some great options that photograph well!
Family Styling Tips:
Remember that you don't have to completely match each other! Choose 2-4 complimentary or similar colors and stick with them. For example you could choose jewel tones, earth tones, or pastels. It's okay to have a few people wear a pattern so long as the patterns compliment each other and don't make one person stick out from the rest.
What Can I Expect?
Newborn Sessions: I prefer to photograph newborns in their own homes because its easier for the baby and parents to stay in their own environment. I can usualy find a source of light (a large window, sliding glass door, etc.) that will work for my purposes in your home. I will bring my newborn set up to your home including several blankets and props for you to choose from. If there is a special prop, outfit, or idea that you would like to use please feel free to let me know I am happy to oblige.
Newborn sessions typically last 2-3 hours and are done in an unhurried pace. While its best to do newborn photos in the first 10 days of life, I can still work with an older baby. Babies over 10 days old tend to be more difficult to pose in those adorable newborn poses.
Since the best time to photograph a baby is in the first 10 days of life it can be hard to schedule a photography session in advance. If you are interested please contact me before the baby is born and let me know when you are due and once again when the baby is born so we can schedule your session.
Baby, Child, and Family Sessions:
When you contact me we can discuss the location for your photos. We can meet at your home, a local park, or a location you feel most suits your family. I will spend as much time with you as I need to get quality photos for you to choose from. A typical session lasts 1-2 hours. I prefer to work organically with a little less posing and a lot of fun!
When Will I Get My Photos?
Your photos will be ready within 4-6 weeks. Weddings are 6-8 weeks.
